Feedback from families, members and volunteers in the Oregon State University Extension Service 4-H Youth Development Program in Lake County indicated the members needed extra education and learning opportunities outside of the club environment in order to enhance their 4-H experience. In response, 4-H in Lake County held livestock fitting and showing clinics throughout 2022 that were open to both 4-H and FFA youths.
The cattle camp was held in Paisley. Youths were allowed to bring their own animal to practice with. The camp included a full day of clipping and fitting demonstrations and practice, and a full day of showmanship practice with real-time feedback, show prep, and stall setup. Twenty youths and 20 adults attended the camp, which brought in more than $1,000 in sponsorships.
The show pig camp was held at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Lakeview and covered feeding, daily hair and skin care, clipping, show management and showmanship. More than 20 youths and 20 adults attended the camp, which brought in more than $1,000 in sponsorships.
The sheep and goat show camp held in Paisley focused on feeding, selecting, washing, clipping, fitting and showing, among other things The youths brought their animals to practice with real-time feedback. More than 20 youths and 25 adults attended, and sponsorships totaled more than $1,500.
The dog clinic held at the Lake County Fairgrounds covered all aspects of obedience, showmanship, bathing, handling, show attire and ring etiquette. The clinic allowed all participants to practice maneuvers with their own dogs and was attended by all nine of the county’s 4-H dog members and their families.
The rabbit and poultry show camp was held at the Lake County Fairgrounds and covered topics including feeding, selection, fitting, nutrition and basic handling. Live animals were provided to provide youths a chance to practice with the various species. More than 25 youths and 15 adults attended.
