Crooks, Deschutes and Jefferson counties in central Oregon have a large number of forage producers who want the latest information and research available to help them manage their forage operations better. Producers and agribusiness crop agronomists also need Oregon Department of Agriculture Pesticide Recert credits to maintain their different pesticide application licenses.
The Central Oregon Forage Seminar is held in on the last Wednesday in January each year in Prineville in Crook County. The Central Oregon Hay Growers' Association Board works with the Oregon State University Extension office in Crook County to sponsor the seminar and provide forage education to producers. In 2020, the seminar drew 40 attendees and several OSU faculty presented sessions, including:
- Clipping height effect on orchardgrass hay
- OSU forage grass identification project update
- Glyphosate and risk
In addition to the seminar, OSU agricultural faculty have tested many new varieties of alfalfa, cereals, and grasses. OSU barley breeders have also developed winter forage barley that is more disease-resistant and better suited to the particular climates of Oregon’s hay-producing regions. OSU has also helped establish standards of product quality for hay and forage, based on nutritional analysis and digestible fiber content.
